Always read and understand the instructions supplied with photographic chemicals

PROCESSING CHEMICALS
  • Do not allow chemicals to come into contact with eyes and skin.  If they do, wash the eyes with lots of fresh water and consult a doctor.
  • Wear gloves and protective clothing.  Fixer is a mild acid so wear an apron to avoid damage to clothes and other articles.

INHALATION OF VAPOURS, DUSTS AND MISTS
  • Avoid formation of chemical dusts and mists.
  • Avoid inhaling chemical fumes - i.e. when mixing the developer from powdered chemicals.  Fixer may cause irritation to the throat and lungs.
  • Work areas should have good ventilation.
  • Remove via extractor fan, the vapours from the tanks of Ilfochrome Classic and Rapid processors, unless the processor has a built-in activated charcoal air filter.
  • If a filer is fitted, it should be replaced at least every 3 months.

DARKROOM AND MIXING ROOM
  • Keep these places clean.
  • Clean up spilled chemicals as soon as possible.
  • Powder chemicals and the residue from dried solutions may become airborne and inhaled.

INGESTION OF CHEMICALS
  • Never smoke, or take food and drink into areas where chemicals are handled.
  • Keep all chemicals out of reach of unsupervised children.
  • Do not store chemicals in areas used for foodstuffs.
  • Do not use empty chemical containers for storing food or drink, or vice versa.

MIXING CHEMICALS

Adding developer or other alkaline solutions to fixer can lead to the formation of ammonia vapour.
  • Do not add strong acids to developers or fixers, as this can generate sulphur dioxide gas.
  • Ilfochrome Classic and Rapid bleaches contain strong acid and must be handled with care.

STORAGE

Processing products should be stored in a cool, dry, ell ventilated area,
  • Keep out of the reach of children.

DISPOSAL
  • Waste and use materials must be dispensed of in accordance with the general requirements of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
  • Further advice can be obtained from the local water authority.

Processing products must not be discharged to municipal effluent systems without permission.

FIRE AND EXPLOSION
  • Processing chemicals are not normally flammable products.  Those that are flammable are clearly identified on the pack label and should be stored and handled according to the Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquid Petroleum Gas Regulations 1972.

SPILLAGE
  • Collect and contain spilled material in either sand or earth.  Do not allow them to enter drains, and dispose via a licensed contractor.
